Great place! Extremely friendly staff, they are very accommodating. The food is fantistic, you will never be disappointed in what you order. The best part? Homemade tortillas, corn or flour. It's a little bit more pricey than the average Mexican restaurant , but you get what you pay for. One of the best things about this restaurant is the view, it overlooks lake Hefner. So no matter what you're looking for, family evening or quick bite they've got it all.

This restaurant was nothing special. Some friends and I dined at one on a Sunday afternoon. Prompt seating was great, but the customer service of our service and the taste of the food was just mediocre, especially for the price.

Key Search Words: - "Safe" - "Tex-Mex" - "My parents are afraid to try actual ethnic food" Now if anyone decides to use Yelp to find an entirely unadventurous (is that a word?) pseudo-Mexican meal to appease their white bread[1] family's tastes, hopefully this review will pop up to help them. See, I'm here for you whether you realize it or not. Mama Roja Mexican Kitchen is capitalizing on its excellent location (near Lake Hefner) and a Southerner's penchant for Tex-Mex food; and kudos to them for finding what has to be the easiest way into the average Oklahoman's wallet. I would take Ted's Cafe Escondido over this place. I don't even mean that as an insult. Ted's is average Tex-Mex, but the overpriced menu at Ted's includes complimentary chips AND tortillas. At Mama Roja, it's only complimentary chips. To be fair, the chips are pretty good (light and crunchy, although the salt is kind of unnecessary imho), as is the queso. The salsa is utterly boring. Even when I requested their hottest salsa (the habanero), I was left disappointed because it's bland as all get out. Recently, I got the lunch special, which was (with water, after tip) $11.00+. That... is not a lunch special. That is the price for a full meal at a comparable restaurant. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Certainly nowhere near the best that OKC has to offer even by Tex-Mex standards. But the portions are moderately bloat-worthy, even for the lunch menu. I got the burrito, which tasted like... food and stuff. It came with rice, and beans of your choice (there are three or four options). Word to the wise: the "Borracho beans" (in case you didn't know) has meat in it. Actually, if you're vegetarian, you may want to check with your waiter/server before you order anything, because even if the menu descriptions sound vegetarian, they may not actually be vegetarian (e.g. the cheese enchilada that my vegetarian friend ordered was covered in chili). Service is quite good. So the math in my wholly arbitrary rating system works out as follows (assuming I can add and divide): Food [*][*] + Service [*][*][*][*] + Location [*][*][*][*][*] + Price/Value [*][*] = [*][*][*] (A-OK) [1]Note: "white bread" was used as a replacement term for "boring" and is in no way my connotation for a particular skin tone. Lord knows I don't need to be accused of racism.

Always fresh. The chips and quest is a favorite with me Andy group. Nice view of the lake, and fast, friendly service.

I came here today for a work lunch outing. We were sat promptly (we did make reservations), and the atmosphere, building, and staff were very nice. This is my second time here. My first time, I honestly don't remember if I liked it or not so I'm guessing it didn't amaze me the first time. Anyway, sitting next to the lake is great. The complimentary chips are good, light, crispy, and lightly salted. Queso was great, and salsa was good. Those are the good things about the restaurant. I ordered a fish and shrimp taco with black beans. The beans were extremely salty. I hope someone just left the salt bottle lid loose in the kitchen. My tacos were just okay. They weren't visually appealing and were smothered in a sauce that was overpowering. I actually had to move sauce aside to see if my taco contained shrimp or fish. It's a convenient place for groups because of the location and scene, but I won't be going back on my own.

Surprisingly enjoyable dining experience even without the view of Lake Hefner (we ate at night). The staff was friendly, attentive and responsive. The thin chips, served with abundant queso and mild salsa, we're delicious (but be careful to not fill up on them). My enchiladas were stuffed with cheese and chicken and the margaritas were refreshing. Everyone on our large party had a very positive dining experience. Highly recommended for fans of affordable Tex-Mex.

I'm slightly stumped why this place has such bad reviews. I come here once every few months, and it's always pretty darn good. Came back for Happy Hour this week, and the thing that always gets me are the chips and salsa. Their chips come out with a small cup of queso and a red salsa. BUT... make sure you also ask for the green tomatillo salsa so you can go stoplight on that shit! They all taste so different and great! Top it off like a true American with some carby homemade tortillas before your entree even arrives. (This is why I don't come here more often. I eat an entire meal before a meal.) People say it's boring. Okay, the flavors are inarguably subdued compared to a REAL Mexican restaurant- you know, the kind that doesn't take credit card y no habla Ingles. At the same time, can you tell me which chain restaurant in OKC has authentic Mexican flavors? ........Anyway, this place definitely gets far more credit for food quality and taste than Abuelo's. House salad here is so bomb. One of the best salads I've had in any restaurant. I think where they start to go a little awry is the hit-or-miss nature of the entrees. Some seem to be legit, while others are underwhelming, like fish tacos... I personally don't expect a fish taco in the Bible Belt to be as good as one in California. But I'll admit. Fish tacos here are meh. They do get a raised eyebrow for not having a margarita on the Happy Hour menu. HH is just cheaper domestic beer and half off on queso and guac. We got the queso fundido and guac, and I really can't recommend the queso fundido. Not big in flavor, and the chorizo was skimpier than a Chive girl selfie. I'd still come back. The dang freebies taste soooo good here.

My new favorite Mexican place. The fajitas are wonderful and fresh, the enchiladas perfect they have comp chips and queso and salsa. For Mother's Day I had the bomb pop margarita and it was fantastic!!

Generous portion of chips, salsa and queso. I wish we had known queso dip was free before we ordered the $10 queso appetizer. I had the shrimp tacos and my husband had the chicken and carne asada tacos. Both were pretty good. Service was pretty slow although it was crowded and there was a 30 minute wait for seating on a Fri night. The big disappointment was the Mexican chocolate cake which was more like a ganache. It was overpowering and not what we were expecting. Also near the service door to patio dining there was a 2 inch drop down that we saw 4 different people trip/fall down right near our table while we were eating. It should be labeled. Overall a pretty decent dining experience though and big sized portions.

Street tacos had no taste. The refried beans had a bad after taste. Wouldn't recommend or eat here again. Table was dirty and the dead Flys on the window sill made me feel ikl.

  • John R.

Mediocre food. Rice and refried beans were ridiculously salty to the point I couldn't even eat it. The view from the back of the restaurant is nice and has nice sunsets over Lake Hefner. The only reason they are getting 3 stars is the service. We never had empty drinks, they constantly replaced the chips/salsa, and the staff as a whole seemed very attentive.

We do not go out and eat often but Mama Rajo had been one of our favorites places to eat. The past two times we have been here for a dinner and a lunch and it really was not up to par.... We decided to give it another try for lunch we arrived at 11:00 and there was no waiting we were seated right away in the bar would have liked to sit by the windows but once you ask for a booth they sit you in the bar. The waiter were not listening when they took our order. We ordered two drinks of coke and tea... The tea was just made so still warm so my tea had no ice. As far as the food it was temp at hot. The refried beans were spicy... the spinach enchilada were ok.. My husband got the Chico burrito the meat had an off taste to it he was disappointed. Overall we paid 27.09 for two at lunch. We do not plan on going back anytime soon

Food, decent. Service, okay. Prices, high. View, great. I've tried Mama's a time or two and I think it's okay, not bad, just okay. One thing we've noticed, the staff must be required to wear red t-shirts and black knit pants that are a minimum of two sizes too small. Really, must be required because they were all dressed the same way and they all looked terribly uncomfortable! There are many, many places to get far better Mexican food in the OKC area than Mama Roja's though it does have a view of the lake (when it's got water in it) and lots of folks in really tight pants! If you go, I recommend sticking with street tacos or sour cream chicken enchiladas. The small side of guacamole is a tablespoon of guacamole on a saucer, not worth the extra three bucks. Bon Appetite!

It's on the lake. ...and I'm out of compliments. It has a corporate-y atmosphere and corporate-y food. Nothing special. It feels like you're at On The Border. I don't know what it is about the group of restaurants along the lake in this spot but they are all "local" (local chains and/or restaurant groups) but they all feel so corporate.

Great quality Tex-Mex. The street tacos were as authentic as any Houstonian taqueria. They also give you individual bowls of queso and salsa which is nice if you like to double dip. The habanero salsa is really good if you like it hot. We had really good service, arriving about 11:30 for lunch but I could see where it might get a little busy and hectic for dinner.

My first time at this restaurant was last week for a special occasion with a friend--I got one of those postcard-like coupons in the mail, and have driven by it like a million times, and since it was such a nice day on the lake I'm like, why not! Well, the parking situation is horrendous--not necessarily because there's not enough but the lot is like a dangerous maze, both for drivers and pedestrians. Luckily the wait wasn't that long, and we were seated rather quickly in a beautiful sunny room. I ordered a margarita and a quesadilla app, both of which were very delayed and sub-par at best. The entree wasn't entirely impressive either; I had the brisket burrito, which sounded delicious, but really the only thing I enjoyed about the meal were the chips n queso and borrachio beans. The dinner took quite awhile, since we waited to be seated and the service was slow (sort of busy for a Thurs night, but still). Then, because I had somewhere to be and I was late, of course I forgot the coupon, that ended up on the floor apparently and paid $50 after tip--usually not bad for a dinner, but it was a lot for this one... There are better Mexican restaurants out there--the appeal of this one is that it is on the lake. AND this restaurant is also not on the Open Table network, which is especially disappointing considering the price.

Decent. You are better off going to Ted's or one of the dive Mexican spots than here. The main attraction here is the alcohol and lake as far as I can tell. Most of the food just seems decent. Chips/salsa, etc are all just okay. I got the Tijuana street tacos and paid about $13 for what looked like kiddie tacos. Maybe this place is best saved for the view of the lake and if you are into having a few drinks rather than the food quality.

The service was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very clean, even down to the bathrooms. We didn't have to wait to sit. Everything was great except the food and drinks, which weren't awful, just ok. The sangria was overly sweet. At our table there were tacos, rice and beans, enchiladas, salads...and everyone said it was just ok. We still had a good time. Wondering if we caught them on a bad day.

Today was my first visit to Mama Rojas. I had heard good things about it, and read the mixed reviews here on Yelp, so I was really eager to see for myself if it would be a place I would add to my "Must Visit" Mexican restaurants, or add it to the longer list of "Stay away at all costs" list. The visit started out good in that I was greeted by two smiling and friendly young ladies when I entered and they promptly seated me in a booth by the window with a nice view if the lake. My date wasn't going to show for 30 minutes, but the waitress took care of me by making sure I had plenty of chips, salsa and queso. The chips were good, if slightly greasy, the salsa and queso were both excellent! My waitress kept the chips and salsa coming and was prompt and friendly throughout the meal. When my date showed we ordered. She had a burrito plate while I opted for the Migas off the brunch menu. We also ordered guacamole for the tale. The food arrived promptly, and was hot, and fresh. While I didn't taste my dates meal, she went on and on about how good it was and mine was just as delicious. Also, the guacamole we ordered was fresh, ample portions and delicious as well. Once the check came I was frankly surprised how reasonable the prices were. I would give anyone who enjoys good Tex Mex a hearty recommendation for Mama Roja's. I know if I can, I will be back often.

Well...I expect this place to be a lot better. After finishing our meals my dinner date commented, Mama Roja "has a silver spoon up it's ass." I have to agree. The food is overpriced-okay-tex-mex. It's better than Chilenos but it's not worth the time, money, or trip out to Hefner. After waiting 25 minutes for my house margarita, I found that it tasted like minute maid limeade and tequila...and not much tequila at that. I ordered the Chile Relleno. It was pretty, but over-breaded. I give four stars for the salsa and the queso. They were the best part of the meal. Actually, the salsa and queso saved the restaurant from me rating it two stars. Sorry Mama Roja but you can cook better.

Great location next to Lake Hefner. Clean business with friendly waitstaff. Good drinks and love the different blends of salsas (have to request). Good food but a little pricey but still a great place to eat, have drinks and relax

Usually has a long wait. It's not really worth the wait. The food is OK. They are on the lake, which is nice. They just started making fresh tortillas, which are awesome. They have a patio, but it is super small, so it's rare to get to sit out there.

If you like terrible food and horrible service this is the place for you. The "crispy" fish tacos were soggy & disgusting. The food is extremely over priced. They claim to be up scale dining with a Mexican flair but fall far short of this. If you're looking to go out in nice clothes don't bother. You'll be over dressed in a faded hoodie and stained jeans.

Solid place... Nice atmosphere and good waitstaff. Very tasty food. But overpriced. It's Mexican food... Tortillas, beans, etc. Profit margin must be great! Wife likes it, so we'll go back.

I was hoping this place was going to be spectacular. It is unfortunate that OKC does not have any stellar Mexican restaurants. So, the search continues. However, I must say this restaurant is on a beautiful piece of property. There was nothing too memorable about the food. I ordered the carne asada. it was moist but not as flavorful as other places where I had fallen in love after the first bite. Just ok. We had a great waitress but that was all that was good. I would give it another try again.

I'm impressed by Mexican restaurants in OKC. While most in Missouri and Arkansas charge for Queso, most in this area bring it to the table with the chips and salsa for free. The service staff were attentive and always around. Waiters from other tables would even fill the chips and drinks. I decided on the fajitas. Combo of steak and chicken. The slices were thick and juicy. Very flavorful. Getting shredded cheese was an act of congress, but it was good. Overall, a pleasing experience along great the shoreline of Lake Hefner. Sopapilla's were yummy as well.

Had a wonderful meal! Food was great, salsa, queso, chips, tortillas. Ranchero Chicken enchiladas were exceptional! Service was good. Only negative was the 1 hour wait. It was expected at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night. Not sure I would wait an hour again, I would just go at a time where it is less crowded. I would definitely go there again though!

Mama said "Let there be light!" And it was so! I have spent two glorious evenings at Mama Roja's with Wine and Palette and let me just say "Si!" The space was beautifully expansive... a studio's dream with clear garage door style windows showcasing stunning views of the lighthouse, giant architectural columns, courteous attentive service and savory Mexican entrees with an abundant supply of chips and salsa.

So I finally made it to Mama Roja's out on Lake Hefner. I'd heard good things about this place so I was excited to try it out. I was still in denial that Bahama Breeze and their Cuban bread disappeared without a warning, until I found the recipe on their website. I still wasn't ready to trust its replacement restaurant yet. Still, we ventured forth and embarked on the start of a spicy and fun outing. The atmosphere inside Mama Roja's is upbeat and cool. The biggest plus, especially in late autumn, was sitting in the sun-room overlooking the lake. You can also sit outside on the porch, even closer to the lake! They also have live entertainment daily and if you visit their website, you can see the lineup of entertainers listed there, and also see the times the musicians play. To begin, and not unlike any other Mexican restaurant, we were served salsa. In Mama Roja's case, you are served two, which is an added bonus. I really loved the warm roasted version they serve. The regular cool one is pretty good too and pretty darn spicy. Of course, chips and warm tortillas complimented the salsa perfectly. Ask for the other varieties they serve. The one with avocado is a favorite now. Our group of 8 happened to go on a Sunday afternoon, so I was able to taste a wide variety of selections. On Sundays. Roja's offers brunch items and I went for the Quiche of the Day ($7.99) - a savory/spicy dish of fluffy eggs, spinach, and roasted pablanos drizzled with a green and a red salsa. You had me at "pablanos". Name that movie ...minus the pablanos part and throw in "hello" instead. Okay, dumb movie line...but I surely do love pablanos, especially roasted ones. I think they're close to the top of my list of veggies right now. Anyway, I opted for the roasted potatoes instead of the beans and both of my items were fantastic. Mr. Wonderful got the Migas ($7.99), and he was coveting my quiche because the Migas were, shall we say, a little unplentiful? Let's cut to the chase...sparse might be a better word. Laura ordered the fish tacos ($12.00) and she thought they were pretty good. You get two and they are double wrapped in corn tortillas which is the traditional Mexican taco way. And speaking of tacos, Roja's offers street taco cart fare in a dish by way of double, white-corn tortillas filled with crispy shredded beef, cilantro, onions and jack cheese. They're a tad pricey at $8.99, but hey, you're paying to eat on the lake, so you kind of expect it. I also tasted the Ranchero Chimichanga ($10.99) and it was good, although nothing special compared to other places. Mama Roja's does have a featured lunch menu. Prices range from $6.99 to $9.99 which isn't horrible for a nice lunch on the lake. We will definitely go back to Mama Roja's in the future. It's a happening place, with atmosphere, good food and I want some more of that roasted salsa. And I'm gonna figure out the recipe...

The atmosphere was of course great being on the lake. The service was very good and attentive. I wish they had a hotter salsa than the habanero which was also a little watered down. The chips did not seem fresh cooked and were to large for the little dipping bowls. The ground beef tacos were awesome lots of flavor. The big ol burrito also delicious. The food over all was hot, fresh and cooked very well. I would not say it is the best but it ranks right up there.

Just to mention I have been to this place 7+ times and it's time for unbiased review. It's a complete chaos in this establishment. I am not picky by any means but everything has limits. Last time I ordered a drink for beginning of the night. I got the wrong one. The servers are just not attentive at all. So 2 nd server came after considerable amount of time and brought the correct drink. However instead of coke it was made with coke sirup. Management please check your CO bottles daily! The coke was not carbonated ruining the drink again...food came...at the end we got served by 4 different people trying to catch from each other where we at with our order. So if you are from the city you will probably agree with me. If you're visiting or never been there AVOID.

Love the queso and chips and the lunch burrito with the ground beef. The ground beef was very flavorful. Also great location right on the lake. After lunch we walked down to the little light house and sat on a bench and looked out on the lake. Would be a romantic place for a couple! I gave it a 3 stars bc the second time I went I had the brisket burrito it wasnt nearly as good and the first one, and the serivce was hit or miss, one time it was ok service then next time it was great service. I will DEF go back for the ground beef burrito and chips yummy!

I had the chicken lunch fajitas. The chicken was very tender, perfectly cooked. Ted's has better home-made tortillas and much better salsa. I would eat here again but it's nothing to rave about.

Good salsa and good queso. The wait staff was friendly, but we felt neglected at several points during the course of our dinner. I spilled a whole glass of tea on my girlfriends lap and No one came over to help. We were going to order the fajitas but our waitress talked us into an off-the-menu item which she never brought to us. Instead she brought us the fajitas which were only ok, but for the price we thought were lacking. We also ordered the hotter salsa, which was never brought to us. Three stars is a generous rating. The atmosphere was nice though.

I was with Hai N. My chicken was undercooked, and they took it back and it was still undercooked. They say it's the marinade, but everyone knows raw chicken when they see it! The waitress gave me a refund, but still, I refuse to go back there!

I thought it would have been better. The service at the bar was very slow. It was difficult to get one of the many bartenders attention. It was very hot and uncomfortable inside the restaurant. The dining service was good and the food was just okay. For all the hype I expected better.

Outstanding! They had their "A" game on last night! We went there for my 27 year old sons birthday dinner and had 25 guests with us. Everything and I do mean everything was perfect! Our waiter Roja was the best waiter I have had in a long time. He missed nothing! The food was also outstanding! Everything was hot and fresh! Thank you and your entire staff! Outstanding job! Overall grade "A++". I'll be back soon!

Coming from someone who is in love with De La Vega in DeLand, FL I never thought I'd think any other Mexican place was up to par. I have to say Mama Rojas changed my mind. The restaurant was beautiful and had a great vibe. I had the chimichanga, and it was mouthwateringly delicious. Plus I was shoveling down the free chips, salsa, and queso down like I hadn't eaten in days. We had wonderful service, and it really is a wonderful location with the lake right outside. We enjoyed a nice stroll around the lake after stuffing our tummies full of delicious food. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting OKC. I might even make it back there before I head back down to the sunshine state. Thanks Mama Rojas for the wonderful dinner!

Checked out Mama Roja for brunch last Sunday. Brruuuunnchhh...always sounded snooty to me. Why yes, Jeeves, we'll be having brunch on the veranda with the Cavendishes... But anyway. Very nice location on the lake. We got there before the Church crowd and managed to get a table by the window which was nice. I've only been here a couple of times now, but the service really stands out. Once I ordered a coffee which was not very hot. Before I could say anything the server snags it and says "I don't think this was hot enough, I'm making a fresh pot". How often do you see that? I ordered the Huevos Tejanos, which is basically a bunch of stuff with eggs made into tacos. They were really good, may try to make these at home. My date had the Quesadillas, and said they were muy bueno as well. This is a good place to take a date. Nice and clean, great view of the lake. And unlike Redrock, you don't need a megaphone to talk to your dinner companion.

This is a great spot for a happy hour or weekend date night. I've even had business dinners here. The view overlooking the lake is breath-taking at sunset and the margarita swirl is fun for happy hour on the patio. I usually get the carne asada with the jalapeno straws (yum-o!) and love that they offer the option for black beans and grilled veggies although they also have the typical rice and beans (although the drunken beans are a flavorful twist on the original). I've also had the mango chicken salad which is filling and delicious!

We had to wait about 20-30 mins for a table. When we were brought to the back, I noticed several tables and booths were empty. Not sure why that was when there were a ton of people waiting out front. We were seated in a booth next to the window so we had a great view of the lake. The restaurant itself was beautiful inside and out. It was very spacious with lots of seating. They are able to accomodate a group of any size. I thought our complimentary chips and salsa were delicious. Very impressed with the chips - they were extra crispy. The food wasn't the best I've ever had but it was still good. The menu had a variety of entrees to choose from including some yummy looking alcoholic drinks. All the employees worked together to refill drinks, chips, and salsa for different tables. I had a nice dinner here with my date. Everything met our expectations. We had a nice view during the whole meal and you can't beat the location. Afterwards, we took a stroll around the lake!

Very tasty every single time! I highly recommend asking for tomatillo sauce with your chips and salsa. Also, request fresh flour tortillas, put butter on those, roll them up and dip the in the hot complimentary queso and it will change your life. The street tacos, enchiladas and off-menu spinach/shrimp quesadillas are all really good. The classic patron margarita and make it a double for $2 is the drink of choice. It's a good time every time.

Had to await for 45 minutes, but hey it was a beautiful Saturday night. Great food and service, wonderful margaritas just like they were intended with NO grand marnier or Cointreau. I don't like it when places mess with my drink! Nice lake view from our patio table. We will certainly be back.

Food was fine. my only problem was that waitress. if the manager of the place is reading this. Here goes. I had a meeting at the back where there were garage looking doors. Our waitress was rude and made me feel like I was an underpayed piece of garbage that worked for her. She gave me rules and demanded us hand over our menus and when our meal came out, unlike the meny described...she gave me attitude when I asked for the missing attitudes. I was in on May 1st in the evening, she was working near the garage door like area. My table was the only ethnicly diverse table. Food was fine, the service was enough not to come back, unless you believe in communism of being a nazi. that gal needs to take a freaknig chill pill. that sucked. the food was not enough to recover her.

Mama's has a great menu and a friendly staff. Their sweet corn cake appetizers are a meal all on their own, and so good I have trouble not ordering them every time I go in. They also have delicious tamales and veggie fajitas! During the warmer months when people are out on Lake Hefner it can be a fun place to hang out and drink on the patio, especially if they have a band or some entertainment playing that night. And if you want to have a casual romantic dinner, this is a great place to go.

It was a great place for taco Tuesday before they took away the taco special. I love the pitchers of margarita's they have. Would never do the $2 tequila shot special again, could taste it all night. Great choices of salsa. Have never had bad service. Bring back the taco special!!

The best place on lake hefner to eat! The chips seem to always be fresh. You get free salsa and queso. They have great service, always ready to fill up your drinks and switch out your salsa. The fajitas and quesadillas are very good but my favorite there is the brisket burrito. The brisket is seasoned perfectly and shredded into a burrito and served with your choice of side (usually rice and beans.). If you get to sit in the back room on the water at sunset it makes it that much better! Great food great service. We love mama Rojas.

Coming from a manager point of view I was highly disappointed. Our waitress was new which I understood but her trainer seemed like she was new too. When I asked what type of lettuce the mango salad came with the "experienced" waitress said not spinach but it's mixed. So I ordered the salad which came out being all iceberg lettuce and wasn't even tossed. I'm sorry but paying 13 dollars for a salad should be amazing. Now, the waitresses were really nice but lacked some knowledge on their menu which is a huge downfall in my eyes.

Love the atmosphere. Chips and queso are great. Some of the entrees are excellent but some are not as good. I'm not a personal fan of the fajitas. Definitely a good Mexican food spot overall in okc.

I am not stumped. Beans with hotdog pieces nothing Mexican about that and the salsa relied heavily on chili powder for flavor Nope. Salsa should be flavored with real chiles onion lime cilantro Street tacos same. Shredded beef had no flavor I took them apart at home and sautéed them with minced chili Serrano and onion to giv some flavor. Garlic would have been a nice touch. Nothing I ate remotely tasted like Mexican food. Rice was dry like I like it. Chips were great. So if I take it home and doctor it I have a good meal. Except for those beans.

My wife and I wanted to eat brunch by the lake so we chose Mama Rojas and I'm glad we did. We were greeted promptly upon entering the restaurant and shown to a nice patio table overlooking lake Hefner. It was just the perfect time to have a margarita, converse with my wife and enjoy the views. Their patio room is really nice as it has a glass wall that can be rolled up to let the fresh air in or it can be closed in cold weather. There's some nice music that's playing through the speakers which adds to the ambience of the place. We had an excellent waitress which really added to our experience. And from what I observed all the other waiters and waitresses were friendly and on top of their game as well. The bathrooms are kind of nice in this place as well. The restaurant takes great care in having nice bathrooms. I have to say that now is an excellent time to go to this restaurant if not to just enjoy the views and relax.

I was there two Wednesdays ago and ended up storming out. Some extremist group called OCPAC uses their banquet room as a meeting place. I have since found out they gather there every Wednesday and rail against different races and gays. On the day I was there one of the subjects was gays and they were being compared to nazis. Some in attendance were talking about rounding them up for execution. Horrible that you can hear this terrorism while just out for lunch. Mama Roja's didn't care for my complaint and an employee called me a f*ggot and shouted they didn't want my business anyway.

What happened to this place. Used to be a semi favorite of mine and now it's just okay at best. I brought the family here on a Sunday after church. 7 people no wait time given for groups over 4. Okay I can understand that. Next the wait got a little long. Our 7 turned to 6 because one had to be at work. We were finally seated. While being seated we were trying to figure out why the wait was so long. Only guess is they are severally understaffed as well as the staff they have are underwhelming at best. We sat down and ordered. This is when our 6 turns 5 because the wait time also put them running late for an appointment. Now there are 5. We order a double fajita, a kids meal enchilada, and a tamale. 2 adults and 3 kids eating. 2 of the kids being younger and filled up on the Chips and Salsa. The overall service this time was atrocious. We asked couple time for the varying kinds of salsa that they don't bring out but you can ask for if you know they have it.( tamato, roasted, and apparently a habanero salsa) I thing the third time we asked we finally got it. As well we had to ask for tortilla several times. These don't come to the table without asking for them. I read another review that said they don't come free here. They do just ask. Either way took a few tries for those as well. During this time the queso on the table was eaten and not refilled. Sigh seem this list of complaints goes on and on. This used to be my favorite part at this restaurant and now seems like they don't care. Next up the main dishes. Nothing to brag about here just average fajitas, almost average tamale, and what looked like an average enchilada. Like I said nothing that makes you say wow. Well that is until you get the check. Last but not least is the check. For the food portions and quality this is extremely over priced. 29.00 for a double fajita that might be a single portion at some restaurants. They move from cheese enchilada to chicken on the kids meal is an up charge of $2.00(which we were uninformed) The added tamale was a reasonable price at 3.00. Like I said this is way overpriced for portion size and quality. In the end last lackluster service, long wait, and overpriced average food left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I doubt I will be back anytime soon. The only reason for the 2 star is that my previous review was a 3 star and averaged them out. Otherwise one star city and I would say stay away.

Seems strange to me that there are so many mediocre reviews. This place is fabulous! After a string of disappointing restaurant experiences (we recently moved to the OKC area), Mama's was a breath of fresh air. Excellent and fast service, steak fajitas that were darn near perfect and a view that I didn't think was possible in OK. The price for fajitas was par for the area but they were far superior quality than all the others we have tried. A wonderful experience; we'll definitely be back!

The margarita was awesome. I ordered the Carne Asada which tasted OK but was served cold. But this topped it all. Sopapilla served with a Kraft honey packet.

I went to this restaurant a few times. There is nothing special with this restaurant but its lake view. swirl sangria is really good! I usually order the Marinated Skirt Steak fajitas. Food is ok, but I have tried better steak fajitas than theirs.

I have been eating here for a long time because I love the TOMATILLO AVOCADO SALSA, FRESH FLOUR TORTILLAS, BLACK BEANS, AND THE VIEW. That being said, they do a lot of things their own way - fancy tex-mex? - so I can understand why some people don't like it. I want to give some of the food and the service 4-5 stars, but it's inconsistent and today our meal was filling and satisfying, but disappointing at the same time. The chips and salsa are great, you HAVE to try the tomatillo avocado salsa! I love the garlic flavor in this bright and flavorful green salsa! Their tortillas are made fresh and very soft. The are complimentary as well as the queso. I don't understand why people don't like the queso, it's thick and cheesy, what more does it need? My toddler loves it, too. We ordered guacamole for $9, pretty lackluster. It was Sunday at 11:30 so we ordered brunch. I got what I always get - enchiladas norteno ( cheese enchiladas topped with shredded chicken, ranchero sauce, fried eggs, avocado slices and pico ). My eggs were undercooked even though I ordered them over medium. I like runny yolk, but the egg whites were clear in the center. I sent them back and got scrambled and STILL the center was RAW. My husband is VEGAN and ordered Migas with spinach instead of eggs. We asked if it came with cheese, waiter said no, it comes out with a ton of cheese. Then the waiter explained the spinach comes mixed with cheese. WHAT?! So he sent it back, the manager came over and apologized and took both our meals off. We are high maintenance and we know it, but this was a nice gesture. However, Our ticket was still $28 with 3 drinks, guac and a kids meal! BOTTOM LINE: it's a fun place with a neat atmosphere and a great view of Lake Hefner ( which is really low right now and it's not even that great with our red mud ) and if you order right you might enjoy it ( IF YOU DONT ORDER EGGS! ). I will probably return because it's close and I love the chips and green salsa. We were lucky this time with a good waiter, but we've experienced slow service.

To start: I am in the service industry so before I start whining about an experience I pay attention to what's going on. The bartender needed some help behind the bar he was slammed with bar top and well drinks to make. Our server had a party is 15+ while waiting on my party of 2 and another party. She was stretched way to thin. I loved the place will be back, but they need more servers.

Not sure why Mama Roja is getting such a bad rap on Yelp... Hubs and I love it here! I am all about ambience and let me tell you, this place has it! Free chips, salsa, and cheese dip just for showing up and the chips are really good. We normally split the Monterey Dinner w/ chicken and it's delicious. I could see how people would say this place is expensive, but because we split a meal we think it is fairly priced. It is nice to have this next to Lake Hefner too. The location is good, the food is good.... give it a try... you might enjoy it!

I ordered the carne asada plate and the meat was DELICIOUS!! I highly recommend this plate. The waiter showered us with salsa, queso and chips while we waited for our meal. This def made the experience a good one, we never felt unattended. The queso is the best I've had anywhere else. I also ordered the seviche appetizer, which I really didn't like much. Not a lot of flavor. There is a mango salad we ordered and it was also very yummy. Over all a great experience and I highly recommend this place. Perfect for any event.

The atmosphere is very great and I love the view of Lake Hefner, the salsa's are very good, loved the thin tortilla chips. I ordered their traditional cheese, with chili con carne onions and mixed cheese enchiladas, how can anyone screw up cheese enchiladas, well Mama Roja makes cheese enchiladas with AMERICAN CHEESE, what happened to cheddar, Monterrey jack, Cotija, queso Fresco . That was the horrible, how in the world can they call that Tex Mex using American cheese, what a insult to the traditional recipe. The menu did not say anything about using American cheese for their enchiladas. The waiter asked how we liked are food, and I asked what kind of cheese is in my enchilada and he confirmed American cheese. My husband order Pollo Loco fajita burrito, which was very good. I will say this is a wonderful place for happy hour, the Margarita's and chips and salsa are very good.

Every time I've been to Mama Roja, I have been very disappointed. The food is NOT GOOD! The margarita was ok. The atmosphere is ok too, but I need more than a good atmosphere and liquor to want to return. I've only returned because for some reason, my in-laws like it. I can't figure it out. The service is usually pretty slow as well, but I've always come with a group, so that may be why.

The food is good. The service I've recd has been average. It's bothersome to me that the outdoor bar is rarely open when we are looking for an outdoor area for drinks.

Sat at the bar with the hubs last Sunday. We were completely ignored for the first 5 minutes, despite the fact the bar was half empty. Our drink order was finally taken (bomb-pop margarita, Corona, 2 waters). My husband received his beer first (rude), and several minutes later I got my margarita. No water. I asked again and had to wait another few minutes, and only one arrived. We were never offered chips (verifiable in the picture as our drinks are half gone and there are none to be seen) and I finally flagged down a manager to have some brought out. We were also never given a menu, but as we sat talking about the poor service the couple next to us chimed in in agreeance and gave us one of their menus. I had to practically stand on the stool to get his attention to order an appetizer. When that arrived we got to eat it with our hands and bar napkins as we received no silverware and could not get anyone's attention. I give up. No more mama rojas. I love their margaritas, but the service is always poor and there was ZERO excuse for it this last visit.

Probably goes without saying - assuming you heeded my earlier advice, but do NOT, under any circumstances... order their ceviche. Repeat after me: "Drinks" "Chips and salsa" "Queso" That's it. Do not stray - and you'll be okay (hopefully)

This would be a great hangout place for drinks and appetizers. I went out for dinner so I was less than pleased. My margarita and the chips and nachos they serve were great. But the rest of my meal tasted like it was made from cheap frozen food slapped together. I won't be coming back for a dinner, but I might for a night out for drinks. Also it's on the lake seems like it would be nice to hang out in present weather.

Favorite mexican place in OKC. especially because of the view of the lake and friendly staff. I am not big on margaritas but if you are, this is the place to go - they have any kind you want.

Beans and rice inedible. Guacamole had huge chunks of raw avocado, also inedible. Chicken cheese crisp was good was you pulled the overly sweet chicken off.

Great place for a work happy hour! Not too busy and great cheese dip!!!! Drinks are good and the food is always amazing. Drinks were coming out of the bar a little slow but there was only one bartender working and it was starting to get busy so I am not going to hold that against them. Overall great experience and you have to get guacamole with whatever you order here! Yummy :)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
